ALBUQUERQUE – Two men fleeing the police were killed around midnight on Friday, after crashing into a truck on I-40, reports the Albuquerque Journal.
The chase began when police responded to a report of two men brandishing guns at a Gallup motel. The men were initially chased down NM 118, before driving the wrong way down I-40.
Police halted their pursuit once the men began diving the wrong way. However, a State Police officer parked in the median of the highway shot the fleeing men just before they crashed into a tractor-trailer.
The force of the collision threw both men from the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Police say that since this is an ongoing investigation, it is still unclear whether the crash or the police gunfire caused the men’s deaths. The names of the deceased have not been released at this time.
